Engine No 6 Pizza Receives 2009
Community Recognition Award
Nomination!
The Southeastern Mental Health Community Advisory Board
selected Engine No 6 Pizza for this honor due to work it has
done for Martin House in Norwich, CT.
Martin House located at 401 West Thames St., Building 700 in Norwich is home
to 57 people, some with a history of mental illness or addiction, all battling with
homelessness.
Due to a decrease in donations especially from their largest contributor the
United Way, the facility was facing budget difficulties particularly in their food
expenses. In response, Engine No 6 Pizza's owner Marcel Bouley decided that
every Wednesday the restaurant would deliver a different pasta dinner to all 57
residents of Martin House free of charge.
"This is my way of giving back. To help people who need help. We have the
ability and I thought it would be a good thing to do," Bouley said.
In addition to helping out Martin House, Engine No 6 Pizza from October to
Christmas raised $1,652 for Operation Fuel, Inc., a nonprofit organization that
provides emergency assistance to residents. He has also donated food for
several years to the nearby Thames River Family Program which provides
transitional housing for homeless woman.
Bouley received write-ups on his charitable contributions in the newspapers the
Norwich Bulletin and the Resident.
